Form IT-2105.1 is a New York State Department of Taxation and Finance form used to reconcile an individual’s estimated income tax account. If you’ve moved, changed your filing status, or need to transfer estimated tax payments between accounts (such as from a joint account to separate accounts, or vice versa), this is the form that makes those changes official with the state.

Unlike Form IT-2105, which is used to actually make estimated tax payments throughout the year, Form IT-2105.1 doesn’t involve sending money to the state. Instead, it’s a reconciliation and transfer request. It tells the Tax Department how estimated payments already made should be applied, split, or moved between taxpayer accounts.

Who needs to file Form IT-2105.1

This form is typically needed by individuals in a few common situations:

  • Spouses who made joint estimated tax payments during the year but now need to file separate New York State returns.
  • Taxpayers who filed separately but want to combine estimated payments onto one joint return.
  • Individuals who need to transfer estimated tax credits from one account to another due to a change in filing status or a correction of a previous filing.
  • Taxpayers whose estimated payments were applied incorrectly and need the department to reallocate them.

If none of these situations apply to you, you probably won’t need this form at all. Most individuals who simply make quarterly estimated payments only need Form IT-2105, not the reconciliation version.

When is this form used

Form IT-2105.1 is generally filed after estimated tax payments have already been made, but before or along with your final personal income tax return for the year. The timing matters because the reconciliation affects how your estimated payments get credited on your return. If you’re changing from a joint filing to separate filings (or the reverse), it’s best to submit this form as early as possible so the Tax Department has time to process the account changes before your return is processed.

Keep in mind that this form doesn’t extend any deadlines for filing your income tax return or paying any tax due. It’s strictly an administrative reconciliation tool that runs parallel to your regular filing obligations.

How to get and fill out Form IT-2105.1

The current version, revised 12/25, is available directly from the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance as a fillable PDF. It includes AcroForm fields, meaning you can type your information directly into the PDF using Adobe Acrobat Reader or a similar program before printing it, rather than filling it out by hand.

When completing the form, you’ll need to provide:

  • Names and Social Security numbers for both spouses, if applicable.
  • The amount of estimated tax payments already made and the account they were credited to.
  • How you want those payments reallocated — for example, split evenly between two accounts, or moved entirely to one taxpayer’s account.
  • The tax year the reconciliation applies to.

Double-check the Social Security numbers and payment amounts before submitting, since errors here can delay processing and cause discrepancies when your actual income tax return is filed. Once completed, the form is mailed to the address specified in the instructions accompanying the PDF — it’s not something you submit electronically through New York’s online services at this time.

This form is similar in purpose to Form IT-2106.1, which handles the same type of reconciliation but for fiduciary accounts rather than individuals. If you’re dealing with an estate or trust’s estimated tax account instead of a personal one, that’s the form you’d want instead.

Taxpayers dealing with other state-specific tax and administrative forms, such as California’s Innocent Joint Filer Relief Request or the FTB interpreter complaint form, will notice a similar pattern: state tax agencies often provide narrow, purpose-built forms for specific account adjustments rather than expecting you to resolve everything through a general amended return. Form IT-2105.1 fits that same pattern for New York estimated tax accounts.
